Ever since we are young, we were taught that eating well will help us look and feel our physical best. However, we were not always told that good nutrition affects our mental health significantly.
You are what you eat
Sugar and processed food can lead to inflammation in the body and brain, which can lead to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Have you ever noticed when we're feeling stressed or down, we sought for processed foods or ice-cream. On busy days, a cup of coffee becomes the main meal, whereas fruits and vegetables are replaced with high-calorie, high fat fast food.
People tend to either eat too little or too much when under stress/depressed, according to the American Dietetic Association. Eating too much will cause weight gain, whereas eating too little results in exhaustion. This poor diet makes matters worse during stress and depression. This cycle is a vicious one, but it can be overcome.
